4am & Bright Eyed

A few months ago I had a vision. I pictured myself dancing to a really talented DJ. The vision had all the bells and whistles. Lights. Super loud music. Lots of people bunched together. You know what I mean...1am and I'm just getting warmed up. I really wanted to have a night out like that. And, it's not like I haven't had many such nights in the past. I caught the tail end of the 90's rave scene and have been to Burning Man multiple times. ;)

It's just that the way I fueled those experiences in the past no longer jives with who I am and what I'm interested in. I remembered what nights out like that almost inevitably bring the next day (low energy, sour mood and an unhappy body). And frankly, I love my life too much to miss out on a day of it. So, for a moment, I was bummed. But then! A radical (at least for me) idea began to take shape. What if I could dance all night without the typical substances we use to alter our sleep and energy patterns? What if there was another way?

Lo and behold, an old friend from my early days in NYC reached out to say he had tickets to see our favorite DJ. I was excited to give it a go. I made a gigantic super-food laced green smoothie and downed it just prior to heading for the club. And, I had discovered Guarana! I took a pack of gum containing an extract of this energy boosting plant used for centuries by South Americans. And finally, I stashed a snack in my pocket in the form of an "energy ball" containing almond butter, ginkgo biloba and more guarana.

To make a long story short, after hours of enjoyment, there I was, having a lively conversation at 3:45am as I waited to retrieve my coat. And, the next morning, I woke up feeling deeply satisfied and happy in my body and head!

Here's the moral of my story. While we can't always have it all, we can very likely have more than we think we can. And I now know that I can dance all night and still be incredibly productive the next day. Oh, and by the way, the whole thing was a lot less expensive. :)

Raw Food & Nutrient Content

Following on from this month's article about enjoying ourselves consciously, let's sweeten up our discussion about raw foods with a recipe for a decadent raw dessert (courtesy of my dear friend Lori)!

3 Things To Consider:

  • Essential vitamins & minerals, like Folate, Potassium and Vitamin C are heavily depleted during the process of cooking. Get some uncooked food into your diet every day and notice the difference!

  • Frozen foods can actually contain more nutrient content than fresh, organic produce because most is packaged within a few days of harvest, whereas fresh, non-frozen produce can take a week or longer to reach your mouth.

  • Oddly enough, you can actually retain more nutrients when you microwave vs. boil foods. That said, steaming is the method that retains maximum nutrition.

Slaying Energy Vampires

You know who I'm talking about. Those in our lives with whom we are in a cycle of conversation that is unchanged no matter what day, time or mood we find ourselves in. Simply put, the people around us and the conversations we have with them have a real impact on our state of well being. And then, we turn to inappropriate foods to lift our mood. Realizing we have these energy sappers does not necessarily mean we need to end the relationship. It does mean, however, that something has to shift. When you can see where you've been letting your energy be drained, you have access to putting a stop to it.
